Rise and Shine

9 am Friday.

Haiku for getting out of bed during the pandemic…

No No No No No No
No No No No No No No
No No No Please No

If I’m being honest, 2020 seems like the nightmare we all want to wake up from.

Although, as each new day presents itself, it gets harder and harder to develop a routine. A majority of people have had to adapt to new work schedules, working from home or not working at all. On top of that, sharing a work space with your significant other, kids, or siblings.

None of this has been ideal, but carving out the time for yourself is essential.

Mornings are a great time to focus on yourself and knock out some important tasks at the start of the day without distractions.

Disclaimer: If you consider yourself more of a night owl, then these suggestions will only apply to you in the dark of the night

Now, I’m 100% a morning person. I carry the mentality “the sun’s awake, so I’m awake”.

And yes, I turn into a pumpkin when the clock strikes midnight. This changes from time to time but I love the morning hours. Truth be told, my morning starts at 9am, anytime before that and you’re dealing with a zombie.

This quarantine has been difficult in many ways but forming a solid morning routine has been helpful for my overall health and wellness.

When I don’t have work, here’s typically what my morning looks like:

9am : Wake up + Meditate

  • I use the Calm app. Easy 10-15 min daily meditations

9:15 : Brush my teeth, wash my face, drink a glass of water

9:30 : Open up the curtains to let the light in... then COFFEE

  • This is the most important part of my morning. I’m a one and done coffee drinker but wow, this is what I wake up for. This is when I turn on the Today Show and just write out my intentions for the day

10:00 : Morning snack

  • I like to workout in the morning and not have too much in my system. I’ll have a piece of fruit with peanut butter or a piece of toast with peanut butter

10:45-12:00 : Workout

  • This has changed quite a bit with quarantine but I’ve found to listen to my body each day and what it needs. Some days when I need more rest, I stretch and take a long walk outside. And most times, I follow workout videos on youtube. Lately, I’ve been more into weight training and HIIT. I’ve been hooked on the HASfit workout videos, if you’re interested. This gets the blood flowing and boosts my energy moving forward into the day.

12:30 : Lunch

  • If you know me, you know I love to cook up some creations in the kitchen. I take pride in my smoothie bowls, pancakes, and the list goes on. I fuel my body with foods that make me feel good and also taste amazing. After a workout, you want to make sure you have a balanced meal that is high in protein.

I spend the rest of my day staring blankly into a wall… just kidding. During quarantine, I filled the endless hours with painting, cooking, reading, or just binge watching tv shows/movies. This is a time where some healthy distractions don’t hurt. Do whatever your heart desires.

If you know you’ll be happiest laying in bed all day, live your dreams!

This pandemic has weighed on a lot on everyone’s mental health. These suggestions have helped me get through this uncertain time, but it might look entirely different for you. You shouldn’t feel guilty if you haven’t found a routine and your life feels scattered right now.

Take one day at a time.

All my love,

Madi Grace
